Armed with a spoon each, we took our meal in the media room, the closest thing we had to a comfortable room on the premises. Logan offered me the first scoop of the tub of chocolate fudge ice cream we’d brought with us.

“If you weren’t here with me, having car accidents and generally holding me captive on my father’s orders, what would you be doing?” I asked, licking the bottom of my spoon before sucking the ice cream into my mouth.

He watched closely, eyes tracking every lick as his spoon hovered above the ice cream tub, forgotten mid-strike.

Taking advantage of his distraction, I leaned over and stole the next scoop with a grin. Logan caught my wrist and guided the laden spoon to his mouth, eyes locked on mine until he’d sucked it clean. Damn, that was hot.

Scooping his own spoonful, he offered the tub to me once he was good and ready.

“Renovating my farmhouse. That was my plan before this, and it’ll be my plan once we know you’re safe. How about you? Any people you should be seeing? Places to go? You still haven’t told me where you ran off to the other day.”

He had no idea what he was asking.

“I have one place I can go that’s mine. I would continue going there. Otherwise, my life wouldn’t be much different. You just wouldn’t be here.”

Logan frowned, his brows darkening despite the fact I still wore his cap.

“You don’t have friends you’d be hanging out with? I thought I’d have supervised at least one playdate by now.”

“I don’t have any friends.”

Logan chuckled but cut the noise short as he realized I was dead serious.

I didn’t want to talk about this… did I? Family secrets were kept locked up for a reason, but staring into the non-judgmental gaze before me, the knowledge burned in my throat.

“Every girlfriend I’ve had since my mom left has ended up in my dad’s bed.”

“What—”

“He fucks them. It’s some messed up game for him. I get close to someone, and if they’re male, he scares them off, pretending it’s to preserve my honor or some shit. If it’s a female, he seduces them. The last female friend I had is currently in Washington, servicing my father. Hell, for all I know, she was under his desk while I was under yours.”

The laugh that left my throat was bitter enough to burn, and the mouthful of ice cream I’d eaten churned in my gut. The look on Logan’s face was worse as he did the math I’d half hoped, half dreaded he’d make.

“Weren’t you fifteen when your mother left?”

Logan loved my father. Everyone did. I knew he wouldn’t have agreed to this screwy arrangement otherwise. Still, I couldn’t keep the truth from him.

“Yeah. I was.”

God, I couldn’t do this.

Surging to my feet, I gave him a tight smile and excused myself. I didn’t have a plan except to get out from under the eyes of the man who had just had the curtain pulled back on someone he’d idolized.
